
David Long composes and performs music. His new album, All Things, Will Stay, Silent was released in October 2024 through Rattle Records. In 2022 he released the album Ash and Bone and in 2023 released a chamber orchestra piece I’ll Hum the First Few Bars.
In 2024 he co-composed, with Phoebe Gittins, the song, The Rider, as the credits song for the feature film, War of the Rohirrim, recording vocals and choir with Paris Paloma and London Voices respectively, at Abbey Road Studio. He also composed the score for the series Secrets at Red Rocks with Stephen Gallagher. He has recently finished the score for Leanne Pooley’s documentary series, The Choir Games.
In 2024 he performed in the dance show Ciggy Butts in the Sand (and composed the score) with Tupa Tigafua, and composed the score for Paul Wolffram’s feature documentary, Marimari. The Moon is Upside Down, composed in 2023 and directed by Loren Taylor was released in May 2024.
In 2023 he composed for the Auckland Festival show The Savage Colonisers, Little Bits and Add Ons for Tupua Tigafua with the NZDC and the feature documentary, Siouxsie, directed by Gwen Isaac.
In 2022 he composed for Mysterious Ways and Touchdown. With Stephen Gallagher he won best TV score for Mystic at the 2022 APRA Awards.

The title track for this album, I’ll Hum the First Few Bars, is a piece for chamber orchestra, electric guitar and mechatronics. Commissioned by Orchestra Wellington, the work was recorded with Stroma under the ever-reliable baton of Hamish McKeich. Riki Gooch adds percussion and mr sterile, drums.
The remaining pieces on the album were composed for Douglas Wright’s dance work, Rapt, and are performed by David Long and Jeff Henderson.
